Welcome to the Newcastle Deaf Centre

Our base in Summerhill Square provides a Centre for Deaf people of all ages and all denominations to meet, to socialise and to keep informed about issues that directly affect them. You are welcome to join in and contribute to the Pastoral, Social, Educational and Recreational activities.

The rooms in the Centre are also available for hire for a variety of events: business meetings, training sessions, family parties and celebrations.

Job Opportunity: Administrator/Receptionist:
16 Hours per week flexible

Newcastle Deaf Centre is seeking an Administrator / Receptionist to carry out work on behalf of the Management Committee and the other groups based in the Newcastle Deaf Centre. This is a job based near the city centre of Newcastle, in the heart of the Deaf Community. Applicants will have a proven ability to maintain the highest quality of work including accuracy, problem solving and have effective communication skills with a wide range of people. It is essential that the applicant is fluent in British Sign Language.

Iris Luke retires

Iris's friends wish her well for the future

After over sixteen years as Administrator of Newcastle Deaf Centre Iris Luke has decided to retire and was given a great send off by all her friends and colleagues.

Buffet made by the ladies from 8-it-allA fantastic buffet and farewell cake was provided by the ladies from "8 it all" who run the Thursday Luncheon Club, helped make the day very special for Iris.

Work colleagues Tony Gray, Iris, David Marshall and Bill LawsonTony Gray the Management Committee Treasurer said he had been on the interview panel who interviewed Iris for her job and her appointment had made his job enjoyable as she was so competent in all she was asked to do.

Iris added that she would not be leaving the Deaf Centre altogether as she and husband Tony are active members of the Social Club and she also intended to call in for lunch sometimes at the Thursday Luncheon Club.

Luncheon Club

On Thursdays the Deaf Centre opens from 10 am for tea and coffee, there is a three course lunch at 12 noon for only £4 or dinner only for £3 (prices on the menu board) and a raffle with prize money!

How to Find Us

The map shows our location in relationship to the surrounding streets.

By Bus:

Numerous bus services travel up and down Westgate Road. Ask to be put off at Summerhill Square. You are then only 200 yards from the door.

By Metro:

The nearest Metro station is St. James's, however, we are only a short walk from either Central, Monument or Haymarket stations.

By Train:

The nearest main line railway station is Central. From there you can connect with either the bus, Taxi or Metro system. Central Station is located at the end of Westgate Road, approximately 1 mile east of Summerhill Square.

By Air:

Newcastle International Airport is approximately 10 miles away. The Metro system will transport you to Monument where you must change for St. James's station. St. James's is approximately 0.5 miles from Summerhill Square.
